Seachem Purige is a synthetic adsorbent media that actually absorbs dissolved organic materials in your water. This can be anything from tannins from wood, fish waste, excess food, etc. Plus, it can actually be regenerated to use over and over again.
. It is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceeds all other competing products by over 500%. Purigen® controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. Purigen’s impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity. Purigen® darkens progressively as it exhausts, and is easily renewed by treating with bleach. Purigen® is designed for both marine and freshwater use.
Whether you have problem water from driftwood or yellow or greenish water and want to clean it up, or just need a bit of a polish, Seachem Purigen is a pretty solid option to have on hand.
Purigen is little microbeads with a huge surface area, full of microscopic pores to attract and grab onto the organics. You can get Purigen in a 100ml pouch that has it in a flat mesh packet that easily fits in a filter, or you can get it loose in a 250ml, 500ml or liter version and add it to your own mesh bag.
You’ll know its full and needs to be recharged when it turns from to a dark brown, almost black. Then soak it a 1:1 mix of bleach and water for 24 hours. Then rinse and soak for 8 hours 4 tablespoons of dechlorinator per cup of water.
Here is a handy video of Purigen doing its magic.
